Close Quarters | WW2 Movie (1943) - RN Submarines
This 1943 feature-length dramatisation follows the Royal Navy T-class submarine "Tyrant" on a routine North Sea patrol off the coast of Norway.
Like many British wartime movies, the cast of this feature film are the serving officers and crew.
It was also filmed aboard an operational submarine, offering a rare and detailed view of life in such complex, cramped quarters.

Fastest Warplane in the World | Building Britain's Mosquito (1943)
Переглядів 19 тис.Місяць тому
A propaganda film spruiking the success of the De Haviland Mosquito in World War II. But the footage is historically interesting as it captures several important scenes - including the design and drawing office of the De Havilland Aircraft Head Office and Works at Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England, in 1943. The narrator speaks over footage showing a general arrangement drawing for a DH 98 Mosqui...

Captain Frederick John 'Johnnie' Walker (DSO & 3 bars) is Britain's most famous U-boat hunter of World War II. As a lieutenant-commander, he was rewarded with t...

Fleet Fighter | World War II dramatisation (1942)

This is a surprisingly frank and detailed dramatised account of training Fleet Air Arm pilots during World War II. Made in 1942 and released March 1943, it is filmed "on location" in the training rooms, simulators, lecture theatres - and cockpits - used at the time to turn trainees into qualified fighter pilots. FAA training was conducted using Sea Hurricanes, which by this time were being repl...

The bouncing bomb of the famous "Dambusters Raid" did not end with Operation Chastise over the Mohne, Sorpe and Eder dams. Many things would have been saved,if the UK had prepared for war, instead of appeasing bullies before WW2.If you look at the world now, that lesson seems to have been ignored by many.Sadly & disgustingly,”historians” & “historical” shows villify the PM who didn’t appease bullies,Churchill, instead of the PM who did,Chamberlain.

Sub Mariners are very special people. I was a Tanky, when I did my Army exit course at Catterick Camp where I trained when I joined up. I met up with an ex bomber from the Repulse. We went up to Holy Loch where she was being refitted. I saw the "Sherwood Forest" very scary ! He knew some girls who had their own flat and we partied with the crew. They sure know how to party I promise you :) Not just anyone can become a sub mariner, they are a breed apart, and bloody good fun :)

I would have loved to have the luxury of a navigator in the plan with me . Or a Loran or GPS, but VOR and RDF were all that was available 90% of the time. I was flying IFR (I follow road) one night in a rental Cherokee when the cockpit filled with smoke. I cut the main breaker smoke stopped. So I cut all the breakers , turned the main back on , no smoke, then one at a time, I cut them back in . Starting with nav lights. Ths short was in the radio stack. My home field was the closest field, so no course change. I used a handheld navcom to get into the controlled air space, and then it ran out of battery. So I proceeded to mid field entry point and started circling. After a couple of orbits, I was given a flashing green (cleared to land), so I did. I used the phone in the FBO to call the tower to explain my electrical issues . The senior controller told me that the same plan had experienced intermittent radio issues a few days before. It had been checked and cleared for flight without finding a problem. The controller was also a flight instructor, so he had heard about the problem with that plane.

Fastest twin engine aircraft at the time certainly. There were faster single seaters such as late model Spitfires and the first Mustangs and Tempests to name a few on the allied sign that could outrun it. The Germans had a few aces up their sleeve as well, the ME 262 would have been undergoing trials by that time.

The movie is pretty good, but the acting is stilted, yet probably realistic,. I've an interest in Submarines and have built models of them from plastic kits. Photography is the high point and produced during the war years when Submaines were most active would mostly need extra lockouts þhe accents are strange to my ears beccause Im unused to them. Yet having said that I wouldn't have missed it for the world 10/10.

Listening to these survivors; when human beings are caught up in titanic violent events, the mind cannot comprehend......that silence described by PO Briggs.' At Jutland, a gunnery rating from one of the turrets of a battlecruiser lost there. He said ' everything became deathly silent, and then the guns fell from their trunnions, and water came up the trunk. the bottom must have been out of her'. Probably survived because the heavy armor protected him from the cataclysm.

Marvelous. Some of these wartime training/recruiting films were feature film quality... indeed better than many... and this sure is one of them. Reminds of "Above Us the Waves" in some aspects but this is the real deal. Including the submariners sweaters assuming almost kneelength qualities...! Damp sweaty wool and diesel fuel... you can almost smell it. Thank you so much for posting this gem.

The description of the smell of clothing you made reminds me a lot of my time at sea onboard a Deepsea Trawler. The smell of diesel was always present on our clothing combined with sweat and fish when we went ashore after every trip for the 3 brief days we had before setting out to sea again for Iceland for another three weeks.
